memoirs Continued 6 Knaresborough and the River Nidd The carriage goes downhill and over the gorgeous bridge which Mother Shipton prophesied that if it fell down three times the world would end, Well it has tumbled twice, so it behoves us all to keep our house in order. How lovely the view is today. The river shining, the grand old castle, forever keeping its imperious watch over it all. On the further side the long walk with those marvellous beech trees running along the riverside, the broad walk to the dropping well hidden by their golden mass for it is autumn. Never is Knaresborough more lovely than in this rich setting. All this is Slingsby property. The well falls over a rock whose lace is solid stone and anything hung there turns to stone in time. Round the rock are all sorts of things in process of being petrified. There is a museum where you can buy things made of the polished stone which really is pretty - and here, Oh sad sight - is the hunting cap poor Sir Charles wore on the last day of his life - also his pet raven.
